Careers in the Insurance Industry

This month's meeting will be an insurance panel discussion held at the University of South Carolina with Gamma Iota Sigma. The panel will consist of four speakers with a range of experience in the field of insurance including Underwriting, Special Investigations, and Actuarial & Regulatory Services. All attendees will be encouraged to participate in an open Q&A with the panel members.

Price includes pizza and drinks.

Whitney Gurzweiler

Vice President/Underwriter

Whitney Gurtzweiler graduated from the RMI program at the University of Georgia in 2009. She started her insurance career as a brokerage commercial property underwriter for Diamond State Group in Atlanta and also started pursuing her CPCU. After two years, she switched roles in the industry and moved to the wholesale side with Burns & Wilcox while finishing her CPCU designation. Whitney moved to Charleston, SC in 2014 to open a Burns & Wilcox branch focusing on commercial products. Currently, she is working for AMWINS Access and assisting local retail agents to place their commercial small business.

Jody Parker

Jody Parker is a graduate of the University of South Carolina where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice. He began his career as a State Trooper with the SC Highway Patrol. He accepted a position with SC Farm Bureau Insurance in their Special Investigations Unit in 1999. Mr. Parker has earned the following professional designations: Fraud Claim Law Associate, Associate in Claims and Certified Insurance Fraud Investigator. He was promoted to Manager of the Special Investigations Unit in 2007 and continues to serve in that capacity. His area of emphasis is investigating various types of property and casualty fraud.

Bethany Bauman

Bethany Bauman is a graduate of Bowling Green State University where she earned a Bachelor's degree in Exercise Science. After graduating, she explored various career options, but ultimately decided on a career in Insurance. Bethany started with Auto-Owners in 2013, as a Personal Lines Underwriter, in Michigan. After accepting a transfer to SC in 2015, she became a Commercial Lines Underwriter and in 2017 was promoted to Personal Lines Underwriting Supervisor, which is her current position.

Lisa Kerns

Director, Actuarial & Regulatory Services
South Carolina Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company

Lisa Kerns is the Director of Actuarial and Regulatory Services for SC Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance. Her duties include responsibility for data analytics, ratemaking, reserve analysis, statistical reporting, regulatory filings and interdepartmental initiatives. She began her career with Farm Bureau in 1990 after graduating from Erskine college with an AB degree in Mathematics with an emphasis in Computer Science. Kerns is an associate member of the Casualty Actuarial Society and a member of the American Academy of Actuaries. She is an AIR Worldwide Certified Catastrophe Modeler and serves on the Actuarial Committee of the South Carolina Wind and Hail Underwriting Association.
